I'm writing this as a response to but really it goes to everyone because I think it needs to be explained to get over intolerance.
DeviantART, as well as other social networks and places, has changed its icon to a rainbow one. I, as an homosexual, feel the need to explain this because there's so much lack of information nowadays. The rainbow flag, and the rainbow colors in general, do not represent homosexuals or LGBT people, it represents equality. It is a symbol that stands for a Human Right, as well as the white dove represents peace. So yeah, I don't think it is a bad idea to have your website fight for a Human Right. The rainbow flag is a reminder of the fight that we, LGBT people go through in our lives, a fight that straight people don't have to go through. A fight with society, a fight with others and, most importantly, a fight with ourselves.
This is something that I think straight people don't usually think about, but I think it needs to be told. Imagine living in a body that is not yours, imagine waking up every single day living a life where you don't belong. Exactly that is what happens to a transsexual person. I don't think being gay is something easy, and it really breaks my heart to see that people don't see it the same way. I would like to make you feel what we feel, the feeling of deception, the feeling of knowing that you can't meet people's expectations of you just because you like something different, the feeling of disappointing the people you love because of something that you cannot control. As I said, I would like to make you feel what we feel, but I can't.
All that pain is not natural, is not how we should feel. We are people, I think that we should have the right to love ourselves and to be loved the same way as straight people. We will only get that if we fight for equality.
The rainbow logo doesn't mean you have to support gay people directly, it means that you have to support equality. If DeviantART changed its logo to support black people's rights I bet people wouldn't complain so much, so what's the difference?
It's not about gays, lesbians, fags, trans people, queers, however you wanna call us. It's about EQUALITY. Let's fight for EQUALITY.
